So...tell me about yourself!

The other day, during Thanksgiving break, Abigail and Brian sat down and had lunch together. As is usually the case, when they are sitting at the kitchen table the two of them will have little mini conversations with each other.

Well, this day was no different. As they were eating, Abigail turns to Brian and says, "So, tell me about yourself!" I'm sure you can picture the scene as I am standing behind them in the kitchen chuckling to myself ~ but not too much as to give reason for embarrassment for said question ~ and Brian, once he gets himself under control begins, "Well, lets see. I'm 43 years old. I have a beautiful wife of 21 years...etc." and thus begins their lunch-time conversation.

Which got me thinking about the 'things' I would share about Abigail. So I began to concoct a list in my head (which isn't always a safe idea as much of that information gets lost from time to time :0)) and so here's what I've come up with so far:

  • she's 3 years old ~ though she doesn't usually verbally tell you her age, she does appropriately show you three fingers and then tells you she's 10.
  • she can sing most of the lyrics to Journey's "Don't Stop Believing"
  • she HAS to have a napkin next to her whenever she sits at the table eating (meticulously must wipe her face)
  • she LOVES to tell make up stories that start with either 'Once upon a time...' or 'One day...'
  • she can have a conversation using the word "because" and "and then"more times in one sentence than anyone I know
  • she weighs 34.8 lbs and is 38 inches tall
  • she loves to have her picture taken
  • she loves to dance and twirl (especially to "I like to Move it, move it")
  • whenever she sings she always finishes with a "did you see me sing?"
  • she loves to help me out no matter what it is
  • she loathes wearing pants, but has conceded to the fact that it is winter-time and she must to stay warm
  • she adores her brothers
  • she LOVES Frappuccino's
  • she cannot stand to ride in the cart at stores ~ prefers to walk
  • she loves Angelina Ballerina, Clifford, Franklin, Little Bear, Toy Story & Madagascar
  • she loves sparkly lip gloss - which she'll tell you boys don't wear, they wear chapstick
  • she loves to color
  • she loves to be read to
  • she's funny
  • she doesn't like to cuddle ~ being trapped or held down drive her crazy
  • she's spicy ~ sassy little attitude
  • she likes to do it her way

Christmas Tree...IN NOVEMBER???

Awww, so much of our life these days centers around Little Miss Princess as she pretty much commands the room, our attention, etc.

We truly are more than our 3 year old.

We LOVE our boys!
They bring a different sort of joy into our lives.
They are funny, man are they funny.

We can have deep meaningful conversations with each of them.
They are responsible (for the most part) and willing to help out when needed.
I often don't post a whole lot about their doings ~ and not because I don't want to either.
I suppose because the post would look a lot like a schedule (work, school, youth group, xbox).

Nonetheless...it all comes back to Princess Abigail!
Her 'marked' level of achievement, accomplishment, growth changes every day.
So...it should not be a surprise that her enthusiasm about the holiday season (especially Christmas) would be contagious!
As soon as Halloween was over and the 'scary' decorations disappeared in the store, out came the holiday cheery decorations of twinkly lights, ornaments and cheerful songs.
We walked into our local Target and she squealed with delight when she saw the christmas trees, lights and paraphernalia.

You know what that means don't you???

Yep, the christmas tree was going up the day after Thanksgiving!
Now, in our house we follow rule #7 ~ Christmas tree does not go up until after December 11th because a certain someone's birthday (namely ME) happens and should the tree be up during this certain someone's birthday there might be "GIFT CONFUSION"!
Anyone who has a birthday in December knows that it is NOT OKAY to combine birthday and Christmas gifts into one!
Unless of course you are 16 and receiving that long wished for '67 Mustang that just so happens to find its way into your driveway!
THIS WAS NOT ME!!!
So as to not give any false ideas about if combo gifts are acceptable, we just don't put the tree up until after December 11th, so that birthday gifts are just that...for the birthday (of which gifts are gladly accepted at P O Box 1631! :0))

Thus brings me to the breaking of rule #7! Yes, we did.
I still cannot believe it but we intentionally broke rule #7!
The Christmas tree is officially up and the girl cannot be any happier.
As anyone who has a 3 year, who helps out with the tree knows, most of the ornaments are in the lower 2 branch quadrant of the tree and I am not moving a single ornament.
It's NOT about having a perfectly balanced decorated tree, not here in my house.
It's about the joy on my sweet little girls face when I would hand her ornament after ornament to place onto the tree.

See...it's perfect!

In addition to the tree, she also LOVES the nativity set, of which she calls the wise men 'soldiers'. It really was a great day of experiencing 'glee' through the eyes/heart of our daughter.

We are truly excited to celebrate this wonderful season!

Weekend of 'Thankful' Cooking

It all started with a pot!

Not just any ordinary pot.

A dutch oven type of pot.

Not just any ordinary dutch oven either.

Rather an enamel coated cast iron dutch oven to be exact. (thanks Ford for the info)

A little flour, a little water, pinch of yeast and some salt and away you go onto your journey of making a delicious crusty crust artisan bread that leaves you feeling like you've just been to the local bakeria in Italy.

Now at this point, one would think you'd need to roll up your sleeves in preparation for a whole lot of kneading! Not so, grab another cup of coffee, snuggle under that warm fleece blanket and continue with that wonderful book you've engrossed yourself in. Okay...well somewhere in the world 'someone' would have the luxury of doing just that but for my little world, I think I'll continue cleaning my house, doing laundry, mopping up dog vomit and let's not forget the 3 year old who we've left to her own devices and has now layered the floor with Kleenex in an attempt to 'help mommy out' so the boys don't track in snow!

Back to the dough...still rising

So, here comes the flour part. Roll up your sleeves and well I'm not really sure why now cause you don't kneed to knead! Just fold twice and leave it. Back to figuring out what Abigail is doing now.

Awww, the moment has come to take a quick viewing of this beautiful bread in the baking process. The cover was on but of course what kind of photo op would that be right!

Is your mouth watering??? Mine is, so I think I better cut into this delectable loaf and see what lies inside!
Every bit as good as it looks, nah...even better! And can you believe it, this was my very first loaf making this bread! Since...I've made 5 more - couldn't help myself. Even put fresh rosemary in the one last night! YUMMM!

Let's talk TURKEY!!! This is the first time I attempted a brine for our turkey and can I just say OH MY GOSH, the ONLY way to cook a turkey. Fabulous doesn't even begin to describe the outcome of this bird.

AND, if I can say so (of course I can it's my blog right), this is the most beautiful turkey I've ever produced. AND...to save myself work, hassle, etc I cooked this bad boy the day before Thanksgiving to allow my time, energy and space in the kitchen for all of the other dishes on Thanksgiving Day.

Looks like someone else thought it might be a delicious bird too!

And though Thanksgiving is not all about the food (though for some it might be), it is a huge part of the holiday process.

We are so thankful for ALL that God has provided for us ~

First Snow Fall...

And most likely not the last, so they say.
Traffic last night was a mess. Cars in gridlock (literally bumper to bumper) on I-5 for 10+ hours.
Fortunately my family made it home safe and sound (with a few guests-friends and fellow employees from Starbucks who couldn't make it home).
Good news...no snow today! Sunny and blue sky.
Bad news...it's currently 14 degrees~COLD!!!!
The fire is burning, coffee cake is in the oven and the bread is rising on the table.
Gonna be a cozy day!

Honesty beyond reason {disclaimer: it's a bit lengthy}

So…I’ve been doing a lot of thinking; rather soul searching to be precise, which is causing me to make choices/decisions that may go against the world that surrounds me.

I have the pleasure and privilege of attending a bible study close to my home, Beth Moore’s study of Daniel and boy oh boy has it been life changing. I mean really, it’s no surprise (or shouldn’t be) that this study would resonate so greatly with me considering the culture/society that I am surrounded by is really no different than the Babylon where Daniel lived. Here is how Beth Moore opens her study of Daniel, describing Babylon:

Drive within the suburbs of modern Baghdad and you’ll find the scattered ruins of one of antiquity’s most famous cities. Her name is Babylon. Through the paintbrush of Scripture, we’ll see her rise from the dust, robe herself in riches, and paint her face like a woman of the night. Make no mistake: she aims to seduce. Posing as the beautiful life, she morphs into the current image of what every worldly man and woman wants to be--deserves to be. She is popular. She is desirable. She is intoxicating. And did I say religious? Ah yes. She believes in so much of everything that one would be hard-pressed to tell if she believes in anything. To worship self is to worship her. To worship her is to worship her king. She is dressed for success, but underneath her gaud, she is a lifeless mannequin. A fake. A poser. Her prop is the devil himself.

So, I’ve already studied 6 weeks worth and as one could imagine, my eyes are being opened every single day to how much our current culture/society mimics that of ancient Babylon.

Beth goes on to say: ~ “If abundance leads us to pride, decadence, or an insatiable lust for more, we, like the kings described in Revelation 18, are being corrupted by it.

She goes on to quote Robert Mounce’s ‘The Book of Revelation’ book where he describes this “In her hand [Babylon] holds a golden cup that promises a heady draught of carnal satisfaction. Its contents, however, are quite otherwise…Moral corruption and all manner of ceremonial uncleanness are what she offers.’”

Wow! My mind is being transformed through this incredible study. It has caused me to ponder some things in my life. A few weeks ago while I was blow drying my hair before bible study, my thoughts began to wander to the grey hairs that so gracefully adorn my crown! It’s true, I like so many, have been coloring my hair; which in it of itself is not a bad thing! Yet, my thoughts at this moment surrounded the one question, ‘Why do I color my hair?’ Again, coloring ones hair is not a bad thing. But, in light of the new things that God is revealing to me, I had to really give heed to the question. {okay, here is me biting my lip as I am about to reveal/uncover a true piece of me that I only share with myself ~ true honesty up ahead}

I color my hair because:

I don’t want to look/feel old

I [think] that when others see grey hair they too will [think] I am old

I don’t want my kids to be embarrassed to be with me in front of others [thinking I’m old]

all around me, media ‘implies’ that a woman is beautiful/acceptable/worthy when they have perfectly colored hair.

As you can see, my responses to that question all center around what ‘others’ think/have to say about me! My thoughts (once my honesty was pure) then turned to what it would look like to embrace the body (hair included) that God blessed me with, and for me in that moment I made the choice to no longer color my hair and allow the grey to become part of me. I made the choice to be ‘in this world but NOT of this world,’ which of course has now led me to ask myself, ‘What else am I choosing to do/not do for others approval, etc?’ [keep reading, more honesty up ahead].

Another quote that Beth Moore uses in her study, which really spoke to me, is by Eugene Peterson from his book A Long Obedience in the Same Direction

“We try to get [joy] through entertainment. We pay someone to make jokes, tell stories, perform dramatic actions, sing songs. We buy the vitality of another’s imagination to divert and enliven our own poor lives. The enormous entertainment industry in America is a sign of the depletion of joy in our culture. Society is a bored, gluttonous king employing a court jester to divert it after an overindulgent meal. But that kind of joy never penetrates our lives, never changes our basic constitution. The effects are extremely temporary—a few minutes, a few hours, a few days at most. When we run out of money, the joy trickles away.”

Ouch! Can you say sock in the gut, well for me anyways. Remember how I said I’d been pondering a few things? Well here’s another! Facebook. A unique site to make new friends, re-connect with old friends, stay current with friendships. For some, FB has become a place of networking for business or causes. It’s fun. It’s entertaining. For many, it’s addicting/consuming. It took me awhile before I finally bit the bullet and joined and began making connections with friends old/new. Hubby and boys had accounts and I found myself checking theirs regularly that I finally found it to be silly when I could just have one myself. Yet, the thing that kept me away from it all along was the concern that it would/could consume more time out of my day checking for updates (I have been known to refer to it as stalker-book)! Nonetheless, I jumped in and decided that I would set safeguards against that, only checking it once/twice a day. Successful?, Somewhat!

A few days ago, I made the choice to deactivate my FB account (and even thinking about it now, I am not sure why I just didn’t delete it instead – another thought to ponder I suppose), and here is my why [again biting my lip as pure and utter honesty is about to appear] ~ it became a source of jealousy for me! There I said it and yes my heart is pounding right now.

I became jealous when I would see ‘friends’ post stuff on other friend’s walls and not on my own.

I became jealous when I would post a status update and no one (or few) would comment

I became jealous when I saw others doing stuff/things that I couldn’t

IT BECAME UGLY!!!

My blog is no different!!! I am faced with another difficult choice; to deactivate the ‘comment’ section of my blog, for the same reasons I left FB. When I sign into my blog, the first thing I do is see if someone has left me a comment…I scroll down past my post with great anticipation only to discover that I have 0 comments. It’s like letting air out of a dozen birthday balloons! Sadness, self pity, jealousy, depressed ~ just to name a few. I LOVE to blog, as I have so much to say! :0) BUT I do not need to be concerned about what other’s think about what I’ve written. Don’t get me wrong, I love to make people laugh (especially my husband) and I love it when people find me funny. Yet, I’ve said it before and I am saying it again {because apparently I didn’t hear myself the first time}, I need to write for me! A place to express my thoughts, feelings, ramblings; a place to have a record of our life that I can share for years to come (I better get on that whole blog to book thing while I’m still thinking about it).

Everyday is a process. I go through withdrawals like a candy addict giving up chocolate! I crave it and have to talk myself off the cliff. I sit at my computer and think “just a little peek” onto the other FB accounts in the house…that won’t be too bad right?!? And as quickly as that thought arrives I have to dismiss it with the knowledge and understanding I am gaining from God’s word!!! I am longing to become more and more like Daniel; one who has a keen mind and knowledge and understanding, one who is trustworthy and neither corrupt nor negligent, one with great integrity.

I do still have an email account where I can be reached, if needed. And…to the 1 or to the masses who find this blog even remotely worth your time in reading ~ Thanks…I’ll be here all day…week…month…year!

How early do they learn how to bargain???

After an evening of fun, it doesn't take long for the 'little' one to remember the events from the night before...like CANDY!!!

So, as any good mother would do, we set a 'standard' for the morning consumption. WHEN you eat your breakfast (and I do mean all of it), THEN you can have 1 piece of candy!

Can you already begin to see the events unfold...Baby-cakes willingly and enthusiastically agrees that that would be a great idea. Once in her seat, her cereal no longer looked appetizing I suppose, as she quickly proclaimed, "I'm done. Can I have my sucker now?"
So...a little more prompting of her to eat her breakfast before I call it good and ask her if she's all done, of which she quickly replies yes and thinks she's getting her treat!

"Oh no, no, no, you did not eat your breakfast!" I tell her.

She looks at me for a second and then begins with, "How about if I go poop, then I can get my sucker. That's a good idea right?"

Let the bargaining begin...right?!?

Give me an S, give me an E...

When given the choice between being a princess or a cheerleader...you can guess which one she chose! A year ago when Dalton was in the beginnings of wrestling season, that's all she wanted to do at home, so I guess it should not have been a surprise to me :-)

Nonetheless, we had a early (while it was still light out) quiet evening of treating with a friend of ours before the crowds of the big 'scary costume' kids. Sadly I didn't get a photo of Abigail with Vivi as when they arrived Vivi's mom was suffering for a massive migraine, so we sent her for a nap and the G-ma's and Brian and I took the girls for their adventure.

They were so cute. At first it was getting the hang of knocking on the door (this was Abigail's first trick or treating adventure). Once they got the knocking down, then it was on to saying "Trick or Treat", quickly followed by a 'thank you and have a nice day' before leaving the porch. At this point before we go two steps down, Abigail would turn to me and say, "Let's do another!" I think she got the hang of it. Super cute! The girls, parents and G-ma's had a great time.

Phew, Halloween 2010 down!!!
Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's to go!!!
